The department has staff strength of 32 spread across five units. There are 6 Public Health consultants, 2 nurses, 5 environmental health officers and 17 Community Health workers of different levels.

The services provided by the department include:

• Immunization – routine and other specifics for adult
• Child Welfare Clinic services (through the immunization services)
• Tuberculosis diagnosis and management (DOTS clinic)
• General consultation in the Dobi rural center General outpatient consultation – Daily
• Antenatal clinic
• Community outreaches – as scheduled
• Waste disposal services (Corpses, biological and Solid waste, Sanitation, Food surveillance and Fumigation of the hospital environment)
• Any other function designated by the management

2. DIVISIONS AND UNITS IN THE DEPARTMENT

• TB DOTS – DOTS unit is an integral part of the department as it provides health services to both out-patients and in-patients. The clinic day for the unit is from Monday to Friday. It receives referrals from old clinics in the hospital and consults from the wards. There is a collaborative activity between TB clinic and HIV clinic. The activities at the unit include the following:
  – Identifying presumptive TB cases and screening them for HIV
  – Ensuring TB diagnosis through appropriate specimen examination
  – Health education and counseling
  – Classifying TB patients for treatment
  – Administration and monitoring TB treatment
  – Carrying out examination of household contacts of positive patients
  – Tracing and retrieving patients who interrupts treatment (loss of follow-up)
  – TB/HIV collaboration activities
  – Reporting adverse drug reaction(ADRS)
  – Collate, analyze, use and report data generated

  Introduction:
  National Program on Immunization (NPI) unit is one of the sub-sections in the Department of Community Medicine.
  Activities of the Unit:
  This unit is concerned and responsible for daily vaccination of both routine and non-routine vaccines for children, adults and pregnant women.
  Achievements:
  – The unit maintains her position as the overall best in vaccine coverage and utility in Gwagwalada Area Council.
  – Up-to-date immunization records and charts
  – Effectiveness in vaccine storage and availability
  – Provision of ice packs for all Health Facilities in Gwagwalada Area Council
  – Inoculation of 688 University of Abuja Teaching Hospital members of staff for hepatitis B virus (first and second doses respectively i.e. 1,376 doses administered)
  – Free inoculation for Cerebrospinal Meningitis disease
  – Free distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets to pregnant women who completed their Tetanus Toxoid vaccines
  – Free distribution of worm expeller (Albendazole) to one year and above children.
• Environmental Health

– Undertakes environmental sanitation, trimming/cutting down of unwanted trees within the hospital environment
– Carries out firefighting activities
– Distribution/ refilling of hand sanitizers to the wards and clinics
– Fumigation of the environment, both internal and external
– Carries out incineration of hospital waste materials, using incinerator
– The unit takes care of all the waste (infectious, non-infectious and sharp wastes) generated in the hospital, there’s incinerator for proper disposal.
– Supervises all the eatery and sale points for proper hygienic factors
– Gets rid of unclaimed or unidentified corpses at the mortuary
– Fumigates the hospital(within and surroundings)

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: Dr. Nicholas Baamlong (MBBS, FMCFM, MBA)

The Department of Family Medicine is an offshoot of the General Outpatient Department of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. The name was changed to Family Medicine in 2006 with Dr A.S Haruna as the pioneer head of department. The Department is accredited for training of Resident Doctors by both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African Postgraduate Medical College. The Department has so far produced two (2) Fellows since the commencement of training in 2010.

Activities of the Department include the following:

• Running the General Outpatient Clinic from Monday to Sunday between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm
• In-Patient care of Patients
• Coordinating the activities of the NHIS and seeing all NHIS patients
• Coordinating all referrals to other Specialty Clinics
• Running the Staff Clinic
• Medical certification of Fitness for Employment, Schools, Embassies and overseas travels
• Comprehensive Health checks where requested by individuals or corporate organizations
• Outpatient procedures such as Incisions and Drainages, Wound Dressings, Debridement and Injections
• Departmental side Laboratory for simple tests such as Glucose, Urinalysis, Malaria Parasite, H. Pylori and Pregnancy test
• Training of Resident Doctors
• Research

The department of Histopathology is one of the clinical departments in Laboratory Medicine. The department has the following staff:
– Consultant Pathologists – 4
– Resident Doctors – 2
– Medical Lab Scientists – 5
– Medical Lab Attendant – 1
– Mortuary staff – 7
– Departmental Secretary – 1

Activities in the department include:

• Processing and diagnosis of histological specimens
• Processing and diagnosis of cytological specimens
• Carrying out Fine Needle Aspiration procedure
• Performing Post Mortem Examination/Autopsy to ascertain the cause of death and for medicolegal purposes
• Embalmment and preservation of bodies
• Training of residents (both in Histopathology and other departments that send residents for Lab posting

The histology laboratory is involved in the processing of gross and cytological specimens. The mortuary contain 10 units of 5-body chamber each (total 50) cooling units or refrigerators for storage after or without embalmment. It is also used for autopsy.

There are 4 units in the department and all units are usually engaged in their schedule activities throughout the week as indicated:

NOTE

• Cervical cancer screening (PAP smear) holds at Gynaecological emergency clinic, Monday – Friday
• The Obstetric emergency clinic operates between 8.00 hour and 14.00 hour daily
• There is a robust Postgraduate academic presentations on Mondays and Wednesdays (15.00 hour – 17.00 hour)
• Other Postgraduate activities are usually presented on a monthly roster in the department.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: Dr Muhammad Rilwan ChiromaThe department has forty-one (41) staff spread across four units. There are five (5) Consultant Ophthalmologists, A Chief Medical Officer, Eight (8) Resident Doctors, twenty-one (21) Ophthalmic Nurses, three (3) Optometrists, two (2) Dispensing Opticians and one (1) records’ officer.

Services provided by the department include the following:

• Outpatient consultation
• Health education and counseling
• Residency training
• Medical students training
• Elective and emergency eye surgeries
• Community outreaches as scheduled
• Refractive, low vision and Optical services
• Investigations like Central visual fields (CVF), ocular ultrasound, Biometry
• Any other function designated by the management

1. Departmental weekly clinic schedule: The out-patient clinics run from Mondays through Thursdays, 8.00am to 4pm. Emergency services are provided 24 hours a day.
2. Units in the Department:

• Clinic unit – Headed by a Chief Nursing Officer (clinic manager) and it is equipped to provide comprehensive eye care services to all patients including counselling and health education, prompt diagnosis and treatment of all ophthalmic ailments. The out-patient clinic run from Mondays through Thursdays. Emergency services are provided 24 hours a day.
• Optometry unit – The unit is headed by a Chief Optometrist and provides refractive, low vision and optical services and investigations like central visual fields, biometry and ocular ultrasound. It is open to patients on weekdays for those who require refraction, biometry, visual field analysis, low vision services and ocular scan. Spectacles are fixed and dispensed accordingly in the optical laboratory daily. The Unit has 5 staff.
• Eye ward unit – The Department has a dedicated twelve (12) bedded eye ward headed by a Chief Nursing Officer (ward manager). The eye ward also has a nursing station, wet lab room, doctor’s call room and examination room, Consultant ward rounds are done on Tuesdays to Fridays while resident ward rounds are conducted daily.
• Eye theatre unit – Headed by a Chief Nursing Officer (theatre manager) and equipped with two operating tables and 2 operating microscopes. Provides both elective and emergency surgical services, there are four elective operation days in a week. (Monday to Thursday).

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: Dr. Ukamaka Dorothy Itanyi

The department is headed by a Consultant Radiologist who oversees the activities of all the units and reports to the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee. She is assisted by the Deputy Director Medical, Imaging Scientist in the day to day running of the departmental activities.
The department has accreditation from West African College of Surgeons and National Postgraduate Medical College for training of Resident Doctors and Radiographers registration Board for training of radiographers.

The department comprises of the following interdependent units:

• CT Scan Unit – A 16 slice Toshiba CT scanner for general purpose examinations and specialized angiographic examination.
• Mammography Unit – Uses low dose x ray for screening and diagnosis of breast abnormalities.
• Special Investigation Unit: This includes
  – Hysterosalpingography used in the investigation of infertility.
  – Intravenous Urography for kidney and excretory abnormalities.
  – Urethrogram for investigations of male urethra.
  – Fistulogram and sonogram.
  – Barium studies for diagnosing abnormalities of the gastrointestinal system.
• Ultrasound Unit – this uses high frequency sound waves to diagnose diseases. Investigations done include: obstetric and gynaecological examinations, general abdominal scans, Doppler scans for vascular lesions and small/peripheral ultrasound
• X – ray Unit – This uses x rays for diagnosing diseases .Investigations are done for every part of the body.
